The analogue to digital converter system of the Specification 1,170,111, in which both the input voltage and a reference voltage are fed via a variable gain amplifier, the gain of which is controlled by the input voltage, to the converter, the reference voltage being attenuated to bring it into the range of the input voltage (the amount of attenuation representing the position of the decimal point) is modified in that (1) a D.C. reference signal is used and (2) the voltages on a plurality of inputs are digitized sequentially using multiplexing means 82 (Fig. 1) and only one set of attenuators 45-48. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 reference signals from the attenuators 45-48 and input signals from geophones are alternately transmitted via multiplexing means 83 to a variable gain amplifier 84 the output from which is fed by a field effect transistor switch 85 alternately to locking and storing means 89, 90; 91, 92 associated with the input signals and reference signal respectively. The two signals are then fed via gates 93, 94 to the analogue to digital converter 66, the two most significant bits of its output being used to control the attenuators 45-48 via controlling means 55- 58. The states of the attenuators together with the output from the converter 66 may be recorded on magnetic tape. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 two sets of multiplexing means 83, 831 are included each being connected to a plurality of geophones and to an attenuating network. The multiplexing means 83, 831 are sequentially enabled by a programmer 95 and gates 98, 981 connecting the output of the converter 66 to the attenuators are similarly sequentially operated.
