Prepn. of 2,3-dichloro-4-aminophenol (I) comprises reacting p-nitrosophenol in an N-alkylated carboxylic acid amide (open or cyclic) (II) opt. with an organic solvent with HC1. (II) is specifically of formula (A), R1 = H, 1-6C alkyl, 5-6C alkyl or phenyl, R2, R3 = 1-6C alkyl, 5-6C cycloalkyl or phenyl, or R1+R2 = 3-5C alkylene. The ratio of solvent to mixt. is pref. 1:1-10, pref. an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon or a chlorohydrocarbon. Reaction is at -20 to 50 deg.C pref. 0-20 deg.C. The solvent is esp. satd. with HCl. The p-nitrosophenol is used at 0-50 esp. 10-20%. USE - 2,3-Dichloro-4-aminophenol used as intermediate for plant protection agent esp. fungicides.
