1,171,273. Alkane sulphonic acids; percarboxylic acids. PPG INDUSTRIES Inc. 29 Feb., 1968 [1 March, 1967], No. 9760/68. Heading C2C. Alkane sulphonic acids are prepared by reacting an alkyl mercaptan and/or a dialkyl disulphide with aqueous H 2 O 2 in a liquid reaction medium containing an alkane sulphonic acid. The reaction may be carried out by reacting the alkyl mercaptan or dialkyl disulphide with the residual H 2 O 2 in a solution of alkane sulphonic acid remaining after the conversion of a carboxylic acid into a percarboxylic acid with excess H 2 O 2 in a liquid reaction medium containing alkane sulphonic acid, after separation of the insoluble peracid. The liquid reaction medium should preferably contain more than 50% by weight of alkane sulphonic acid the alkane group of which may contain between 1 and 4 carbon atoms, and the product sulphonic acid may be separated and purified to give a composition substantially free from water. The reaction may be carried out at temperatures between 0‹ and 100‹ C. but preferably between 10‹ and 40‹ C. The H 2 O 2 used in the peracid forming step may contain at least 70% by weight of H 2 O 2 and that used in the sulphonic acid forming step may contain up to 50% by weight of H 2 O 2 . |
