The method produces panels of varying thickness from wood or similar material, it being assembled from two or more layers (3,4). One at least of these (3) is reduced in cross-section and chamfered (2) to reduce its thickness, the layers being glued together where they are pressed against each other. One layer at least can be initially solid and then machined to form parallel grooves (5), the ribs (6) between the grooves being shortened by chamfering.
