In a fibre mat, e.g. a rug underliner or carpet, the fibres are interfelted from face to face of the mat and intermediate said faces there is a plastics net having two crossing sets of parallel flexible strands, the intersections of the strands of one set with the strands of the other set being joints integral with said strands, and the fibres of the mat on opposite sides of the net being interfelted through the meshes of the net. In one method of forming the mat preformed felts 24, 26 containing an adhesive, which may be unset, are laminated to each side of a plastics net 22 by heat and possibly pressure. In a further method an assembly of layers 24, 26 of feltable fibres, e.g. of cotton or polyester, which may be bonded, and an intermediate plastics net 22 is needled to felt and interfelt the fibres of the layers. The plastics net may be of extruded polyethylene or oriented polypropylene, and the openings therein may be rectangular or diamond-shaped. The net may be produced by extruding it in the form of a flat sheet or in the form of a cylinder which is subsequently cut to give a flat sheet. The net may be heated and stretched in the direction of one or both sets of strands to thin the strands and orient the plastics thereof. Adhesives used to bond the fibres may be starch or resin solution or resin powder. |
