Heading B5N [Also in Division E1] A polymeric laminate comprising (1) a base sheet of a copolymer of a hydrocarbon of formula R-CH=CH 2 where R is hydrogen or an alkyl radical having 1 to 8 carbon atoms with a minor amount of C 3 to C 8α:#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or monoester or anhydride thereof, the copolymer having incorporated therein from 10 to 60 weight per cent of a Portland cement and (2) a top sheet bonded to said base sheet of a thin film of vinyl fluoride homopolymer or a copolymer of at least 75% by weight vinyl fluoride with one or more copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomers is made by chemically activating one surface of (2), applying an adhesive thereto and to one surface of sheet (1) and contacting the adhesive coated surfaces under pressure. Chemical activation may be effected by exposure to a gaseous Lewis acid, to a liquid composition containing a co-ordination complex of a Lewis acid, to concentrated or fuming acid, to sulphur trioxide, to hot sodium hydroxide or to an open flame or by high frequency spark discharge. Specified unsaturated hydrocarbons are ethylene, propylene, butene - 1, heptene - 1,3 - methyl butene-1 and 4 - methyl butene-1. Specified acids are acrylic, ethacrylic, itaconic, maleic and fumaric acid, the copolymer optionally containing residues of vinyl esters and alkyl acrylates. Specified comonomers for the copolymers of sheet (2) being ethylene, propylene, styrene, isobutylene, vinyl chloride, vinyl bromide, 1:1-dichloroethylene, 1:1 - difluoroethylene, difluorochloroethylene, trifluorochloroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, trifluoropropylene, difluoroisobutylene, vinyl formate, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl benzoate, vinyl pivalate, vinyl stearate, vinyl ethyl ether, tetrafluoromethyl allyl ether, vinyl dioxolane, methyl vinyl ketone, N-vinyl succinimide, N-vinyl phthalamide, acrylic and methacrylic acids and derivatives thereof, propenyl esters and derivatives of maleic and fumaric acid. The adhesive may be thermoplastic, thermosetting or elastomeric e.g. asphalt, acrylics, epoxide resins, polyesters, synthetic rubbers and preferably comprise a mixture of an amino ester modified vinyl resin with either a polyglycidyl ether of a dihydric phenol or a vinyl type epoxy resin. The laminates may be used for facing doors, or may be applied to building materials, e.g. wood, fibreboard, metal, plaster or cement.
