The key has a cross-sectional profile to match the keyway in the lock and has a pattern of magnets embedded inside the shaft. The magnets (21, 22) operate on sliding magnets (24, 25, 26) inside the lock, sprung loaded to push locking pins (33) into locking recesses in the lock mounting. The key shaft has stops (18) to align the key axially and to lock the key in the lock if the lock is released.
