Groups consisting of two cigarette lengths, an interposed double filter and a connector strip are rolled between a drum carrying the groups and a co-operating series of rotating rollers, the axes of which are disposed in a circle. A suction drum 2 draws a web of connector material1 passed a cutter 4 where connector strips 7 are formed, and grooves 10 on the drum receive abutted groups 9 of cigarette lengths and interposed filter tips from a delivery drum 8. The drum 2 rotates in a clockwise direction. The groups are rolled by an assembly comprising a drum surface 44 rotating in a clockwise direction and a series of rollers 45, the axes of which are arranged in a circle around shaft 62 and which rotate around the shaft 62 in an anti-clockwise direction relative to drum surface 44. Each roller 45 rotates on its own axis in a clockwise direction. The relative speed of rotation of the rollers round the shaft 62 is such that each roller arrives in the proximity of the drum 2 immediately in advance of a group containing groove 10 and rotation of the roller on its own axis initiates rolling. As the group emerges from the groove 10 by reason of the initial rolling, the rolling is continued between the drum 2 and drum surface 44, the rolled group finally being pushed away from the nip between the drums by the next roller 45 which in turn initiates rolling of the next succeeding group 9. Relative rotation of the surface 44 and rollers 45 serves to continue rotation of the groups as they are pushed around the drum surface 44 under guides 72 to a discharge drum 76. In a second embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the drum surface 44 is replaced by a second set of rollers, rotating in the same directions as the rollers 45 and arranged in a concentric circle therewith so that a group being rolled is engaged on both sides by a roller. |
