A pressure medium actuated friction clutch with axially movable friction discs 12, 13 can be engaged by at least one engagement spring 14 and by an engagement actuator 16 and can be disengaged by a disengagement actuator 15. In the steady-state engaged condition, only the spring force is effective. The spring 14 may be a plate spring and each actuator comprises an axially movable fluid operated piston, the arrangement being such that the spring 14 is rendered inoperative by the actuator 15 when the discs 12, 13 are moved in the engagement direction by the actuator 16.
