The invention relates to a bidirectional optical data transmission system with station devices (3) connected in series on a data bus (1) via optical branches (5, 7), in each case with a receiving and a transmitting unit (19, 21). According to the invention, a signal received via the allocated receiving device (19) in at least one transmitting unit (21) of a station device (3) is amplified. By feeding back signals amplified in this way, power reductions caused by division of signals can cancel one another in the branches (5, 7). The range of an optical data transmission system and also the number of connected station devices can thus be increased in simple fashion.
