<p>An efficient and economical method for detoxifying waste materials contaminated with unactivated halogenated aromatic compounds. The method comprises reacting a said halogenated compound in the presence of a crown ether with a metal, metal hydride or metal hydroxide and an alcohol of formula I HO(CH2)yZ (I> (wherein y is an integer of 1 to 202, and Z is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl or alkoxy, eg. C1-4 alkoxy, group> or with a metal alcoholate of a said alcohol, said metal being selected from alkali and alkaline earth metals (eg. lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium) and aluminium.</p> |
