An instrument for measuring the flatness of strips is characterized by arranging a number of contactors 1-5 in a row across a strip 6 to be rolled, pressing said contactors so as to be always in contact with the strip and measuring the tension distribution from one edge of the strip to the other as a load on said contactor. In another embodiment only one contactor is fitted to the instrument which reciprocates across the strip. A strain gauge 9 is mounted on each or the lever 10 carrying each or the contactor, the tension distribution being determined by measuring the bending load in each or the strain gauge. The measuring contactor or contactors are positioned against the strip by rotating a shaft 7 on which the lever or levers 10 are mounted. The tension distribution is shown mathematically to be dependent on the waviness of the strip across its width.
