A choke valve 30, Fig. 4, urged closed by a spring and opened by air flow is closed at cold starting by a temperature responsive device 60, Fig. 3 which actuates a lever 100 which, in the cold starting position, positively locks the choke valve closed to prevent it opening during cranking. The device 60 has a temperature responsive member 99 in the exhaust pipe, expansion of the fluid therein with increasing temperature operating diaphragm 78 to move stem 86 to pivot lever 100 from the full line position, Fig. 3, at cold starting to the dotted line position for normal running. Lever 100 controls through pin 108 a collar 106 loosely mounted on choke shaft 32 and carrying a lug 114, Fig. 4, which controls lug 118 on a collar 48 secured to shaft 37 to close the choke valve. An extension 130 of the collar 48 carries a screw 132 which, at cold starting, is in contact with the top of lever 100 and thereby prevents the choke valve being opened by suction. |
