[Also in Division F1] An annular insert 13 of a wear-resistant alloy (examples are given), embedded around a valve port 12 during the casting of an engine cylinder head 11, has a body 17 tapered as indicated so that near the edge 21 the alloy softens and there is some fusion with the cast metal. There may be slots (23) in the body 17 for interlocking with the cast metal. The cylinder head and valve port are then machined to remove the metal represented by the stippled area to provide a finished head and valve seat. |
