Apparatus for processing felled trees comprises a tree-advancing mechanism 30 mounted for movement in a first direction, and a delimbing mechanism 60 mounted for movement in an opposite direction. The mechanisms are mounted for movement on guide rails 14, 16 of a frame 12 having cradles 18, 20 at its ends for supporting a felled tree 10. A truncated cone 22 guides the tree into a shear mechanism 24 provided with blades 26 for cutting the tree into lengths. The tree-advancing mechanism consists of a carriage 32 having upstanding pairs of plates 40, 42 supporting shafts 44, 46. A pair of jaws 48 are pivotally mounted on the shafts 44 and hydraulic cylinders 50 are mounted between the jaws and shafts 46 and are operable to cause the jaws to grip and release the tree. The delimbing mechanism 60 is similar to the tree-advancing mechanism but, instead of jaws, has a pair of curved delimbing blades 64. The mechanisms are respectively movable along the guide rails by hydraulic cylinders 72, 72a controlled by a valve 86. In operation, the cylinders 50 are actuated to grip the tree and the valve 86 positioned so that the mechanism 30 advances the tree towards the shear mechanism 24 at the same time as the mechanism 60 moves in the opposite direction to cut the limbs from the tree. In an alternative embodiment, a chain mechanism moves the mechanisms 30, 60. The frame 12 may be mounted on the chassis of a vehicle. |
