PRODUCTION OF OXYGEN-PERMEABLE POLYMER

PURPOSE:To produce the title polymer improved in oxygen permeability, processability and mechanical strengths by copolymerizing a specified muconic acid (ester) with a vinyl monomer. CONSTITUTION:10-90wt.% muconic acid (ester) of formula I (wherein R<1> and R<2> are each H, alkyl or a group of any one of formulas II-VI; X<1> is fluoroalkyl; X<2> and X<4> are each an organosiloxane residue; X<3> and X<5> are each a fluoroorganosiloxane residue; Y<1> is a bivalent hydrocarbon group; and Y<2> is a bivalent hydroxyhydrocarbon group) is copolymerized with 90-10wt.% vinyl monomer (e.g. pentamethyldisiloxanylmethyl methacrylate) and at most 30wt.% polyfunctional monomer (e.g. diethylene glycol diacrylate) at 40-120 deg.C for 5-72hr in the presence of a thermal polymerization initiator (e.g. benzoyl peroxide).
