A method is described for contactlessly measuring the brake temperatures of passing railroad cars, using a measurement apparatus comprising an objective followed by an infrared sensor feeding infrared rays emitted from a brake or wheel to the infrared sensor along a measurement axis defined by the sensor and the objectives. The improved method includes directing the measurement axis toward the passing wheels of rail cars so that it is incident on a wheel flange at a height from 1 to 5 cm above the top of rails on which the wheels ride. The measurement axis subtends a height angle (.alpha.) of 10.degree. to 20.degree. with a plane of two upper edges of the rails. The measurement axis further subtends a side angle (omega) of 7.degree. to 18.degree. with a plane of two upper edges of the rails. A measurement apparatus is activated the moment the wheel has entered the measurement axis by a defined segment. That measurement apparatus emits a signal when the wheel leaves to define a time range. The active time of the measurement apparatus is extended by a factor (N) after the wheel has left the time range. Novel apparatus for carrying out such method is also provided. |
