A copying operation is carried out as set, and the status of a opening/closing detection switch (SW) is checked. If the closing of a platen cover (5) is detected by the switch (SW), and if the closed state continues until the warning delay time has been elapsed, a buzzer (19) is activated to output an alarm. When the switch (SW) detects the opening of the platen cover (5), the buzzer is turned off, and the generation of the alarm is terminated. With the method, if the user does not take away the text paper until a certain time period is elapsed after the completion of the copying operation, an alarm is sounded, thereby preventing the loss of the text paper.
