A process is disclosed for the production of piperazinylpyrimidine derivatives of the formula: (I) wherein R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different and each is a hydrogen atom or a branched or unbranched C1-C4 alkyl group. These piperazinylpyrimidine derivatives are formed by reacting, in the presence of an acid, piperazine or the hydrate thereof and cyanamide to form an amidine salt which is, then reacted with a dicarbonyl compound, in the presence of a base, to form the desired end product.
