Plant for melting iron scrap for the production of steel, inside an electrical furnace (1) comprising a tank (2) and used in combination with at least one electrode (30) capable of entering the tank (2) of the furnace (1) vertically to determine the melting of a charge of iron scrap (3) while forming a bath of metal with a slag on the top, the said tank (2) being provided with a casting orifice (24) for the molten steel and with at least one orifice (27) for cleaning and removing the slag, and the whole being placed in a building (5) equipped with means (54) for the removal of the molten steel and of the slag and comprising a floor (55) for the movement of personnel and of equipment around the furnace. According to the invention the cleaning orifice (27) has a section which is just sufficient for the flow of the slag and the movement floor (55) is placed above the said orifice (27) at a height which is sufficiently high for most of the side wall of the tank (2) to be situated below the said floor (55) and to rise above this level by a small height allowing the direct inspection of the tank (2) from the floor (55) after the cover (11) has been opened. <IMAGE>
