An identifying procedure and system for identifying a visual object, the object to be identified (I) being marked with a po- larizing surface (2) provided in the region of the object. Observation of th e object is accomplished by utilizing the lighting prevail- ing at the object and in its ambience, on the basis of the polarized light (4a) reflected by said polarizing surface.
