PURPOSE:To generate a display without providing an auxiliary discharge cell respectively between display discharge cells so as to improve display brightness and resolution by transferring a charge to the display discharge cell matched with the write timing in a preceding line by an auxiliary positive pole and a negative pole. CONSTITUTION:Pulse voltage, having sufficient potential and period possible to continue a glow discharge, is applied to a pilot exclusive use negative pole 4A of an auxiliary discharge cell, during this time a plurality of pulse voltages for displaying a line in a scanning write direction in parallel to an auxiliary positive pole 8 are applied to this auxiliary positive pole 8, low level signal voltage of a plurality of these pulse voltages is utilized, and a pilot charge, formed by potential by this signal voltage and the pulse voltage to the pilot exclusive use negative pole 4A, is successively transferred to a display discharge cell in a scanning write direction based on applying voltage to a negative pole 4 and the auxiliary positive pole 8 immediately after pilot forming or write action through a wall part space of a sealed wall. In this way, an opening rate, display brightness and resolution of a display surface are improved.
