The spectacle lens edge grinding machine has two half-shafts, one supporting the lens and the other one the grinding template. The lens supporting half-shaft (1) has a suction device fitted to an end (1a) to hold the lens. The half-shaft can slide axially in a bush (3) and is actuated by a piston (21) which operates in a cylinder (22). The pressure medium, acting on the piston, supplies sufficient force to hold the lens stationary during grinding. The force may be excessive for attaching the lens to the suction device. The half-shaft is, therefore, adjusted manually by a knob (34), whilst the lens is attached.
