(A) Avarone cpds. of formula (Ia) and their acid-addn.salts and avarol cpds. of formula (Ib) are new; one of R1 and R2 is H and the other is 1-4C alkylamino; R3 and R4 = H or 2-6C acyl or R3+R4 = 4-6C diacyl.(B) Prodn. of avarone (Ia: R1 = R2 = H) and avarol (Ib; R3 = R4 = H) is effected by extracting the fresh sea sponge Dysidea avara with EtOAc and subjecting the extract to column chromatography on silica gel.
