Precondensates with diphenol carbonate end-gps. of formula (I) where X = a direct bond, 1-5C alkylene, 2-5C alkylidene, gps. of formulae (i)-(ii), -O-, -S-, -SO2, m- or p-; Y1-Y4 = same or different, H, 1-4C alkyl or halogen; u, v are independently 1-4; -O-A-O- = aliphatic diol residue which may be extended by carbonate gps. are produced by transesterification of a gp. of formula (II) where X, Y1-Y4 are as above; n = 4-1200, with aliphatic diols HO-A-OH with a number average mol. wt. (Mn) of 300-15000 either in the melt at 160-250 deg.C or in organic solvent solns. with the diphenol carbonate terminated polymers for 2-60 hrs. opt. in the presence of catalysts. 1.4-10 formula (II) units are introduced per mol of aliphatic diol. Specifically, n = 80-800 in formula (II); 1.6-6, esp. 1.8-3 and exactly 2 structural units of (II) are introduced per mol of aliphatic diol which may have a melt wt. (Mn) of 500-10000. Pref. -O-A-O- in precondensate (I) is of formula (III); R1 = aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic residues, opt. substd. by halogen, -CN or alkyl; R2, R3 = aliphatic or cycloaliphatic residues; r = 5-200.
