The metallisation of transparent indium oxide or zinc oxide conductor paths is effected by immersing the display substrate in a palladium or zinc chloride bath, for activating the conductor path surface, before immersion in a dilute acid so that the surfaces of the substrate not covered by the conductor paths are de-activated, with subsequent deposition of the metal layer. Pref. the metallisation is effected via a chemical metallisation bath after the pre-conditioning, to obtain a deposited nickel layer with a thickness of between 0.2 and 1 micrometer.
