On an industrial sewing machine the presser foot has an auxiliary and adjustable spring action working in conjunction. Pref. the sewing machine head contains the needle drive and the presser foot mechanism. The presser foot is held on the end of an arm which can be swivelled away from the stitch point. It is held on the pin held in the stud at the other end of the arm. This can only be moved when the fork is lifted by the release connected by the rod which has spring pressure to hold it. In a tube alongside and at the back of the forked rod, another spring exerts pressure to supplement the spring action on the foot. The point presses on the arm to hold the alignment steady as the presser foot moves in conjunction with the cloth advance mechanism in the machine table. When the presser foot release is raised, the fork is lifted clear of the arm and at the same time a pin on the fork contacts the shoulder of the tube thus releasing the spring pressure. ADVANTAGE - The presser foot is held steady at high speed working, which allows lightweight material to be seamed in a straight line.
