A metal oxide-hydrogen battery has an outer pressure vessel (1) that contains a plurality of cell modules (6) disposed side-by-side. Adjacent cell modules (6) are separated by heat transfer members (7) that transfer heat from the cell modules (6) to the outer vessel (1). Each heat transfer member includes a generally flat body or fin which is disposed between adjacent cell modules (6) and a peripheral flange (9) which is located in contact with the inner surface of the pressure vessel (1). The width of each cell module (6) is greater than the length of the flange (9) so that the flange of each heat transfer member is out of contact with the adjacent heat transfer member. The flanges (9) are constructed and arranged to exert an outward radial force against the pressure vessel (1). Tie bars (13) serve to clamp the cell modules (6) and heat transfer members (7) together in the form a stack which is inserted into the pressure vessel (1).
