Two metal sheets (26,28) are fastened together by cutting parallel slits in both sheets and then deforming the metal between the slits. This operation is carried out repeatedly to form a row of such fasteners by means of a rotor with a number of punches (20) which project radially from the rotor periphery. The rotor is mounted above two blocks (32) which support the two metal sheets (26,28) with a roller (34) mounted between the blocks. The two metal sheets are fed over the support blocks and under the punches (20) which cut the slits and deform the metal between the slits to form the fastener.
