The holder is made by locating a destructible core (20) e.g. of polyethylene glycol, in a mass (100) of particulate ceramic material, consolidating the particulate material around the core by compression and/or isostatic moulding, removing the core from the particulate material e.g. by heating to evaporate the core through the material (100), to leave a green artifact having a cavity, and sintering the green artifact. The core is in the form of a thin member having openings (22) between a pair of layers of the particulate material. After sintering, the cavity comprises a thin gap (102) between opposed layers of sintered ceramic material which are bridged by struts (104) of the ceramic material, which have been formed from the particulate ceramic material in the openings (22). <IMAGE> |
