[Also in Division H3] The state of charge of a battery 1 Fig. 1 is monitored by means of a stabilized differential amplifier 9 (see Division H3) connected across a resistor 4 in series with the charge and discharge path of the battery. A coulometer 10 as amplifier load integrates the battery current and gives,an indication of the state of charge. The coulometer may consist of a glass capillary tube containing two columns of mercury separated by an aqueous electrolyte gap, the position of the latter showing the integrated current through the resistor 4. The system may be used in battery-driven vehicles and is also applicable to measuring the life of primary batteries. |
