The circuit has the lamp (7) connected in series with the mains voltage via a choke coil (6), with a second choke coil (1) in series with the latter operated at below its saturation. The second choke coil (1) has a core without an air-gap and at least one tap-off (44, 45) for bridging part of its inductance, with a shunt switch (8) for the second choke coil (1) opened via an adjustable timing stage (13, 12, 41) after firing the clamp (7). Pref. the shunt switch (8) comprises a triac, a relay contact or a transistor, with a current transformer (2, 3) inserted in one supply phase for the lamp (7), for providing the current for the switch (8) and the timing stage (13, 12, 41) via a rectifier (9).
