Composites (I) are prepd. by (1) forming in a liq. phase a homogeneous mixt. of (A) thermoplastic fibres, (B) reinforcing fibres with dia. 0.001-7 microns, (2) preparing a web, (3) forming (I) by hot-pressing this web, opt. (C) other components being added to (A) and/or (B) or to web prepd. from (A) and (B). Pref. the liq. phase is water, alcohol, chlorinated hydrocarbon, alkane or aromatic in which neither (A) nor (B) dissolves. (A) are of metal, metal alloy, glass, organic material, thermoplast and/or thermoplastic reactive system. (A) have dia. 0.1-300 microns. (B) are of microglass fibres, C, steel, brass, Cu, Al, metal nitride, metal carbide, metal oxide, silicate and/or organic polymer. (B) have dia. 0.1-5 microns. (B) are sized. (B) comprise 5-95% (all pts. wt.) on total fibres. (C) is surface-modifying agent, wetting agent, dispersant, kaolin, talc, chalk, quartz flour, processing aid, antiageing agent and/or release agent.
