In hardening coatings contg. proteinaceous binder (I) by applying a hardening coat contg. an instant hardener (II) to the (I) coating, the novel features are that the (I) coating is coated simultaneously or consecutively with a first layer contg. (II) and other coat(s) contg. (I) but no (II). Pref. the material has coating(s) contg. inorg. or organic solid particles and coating(s) contg. a hardener activating carboxyl gps. and viscosity-increasing cpd(s).. (II) is an disubstd. aminocarbonyl-heterocyclic ammonium salt of formula (IIA).
