In an end structure for a railway car, said end structure comprising a center stub sill located generally along the longitudinal centerline of the railway car, a side sill at each side of the car extending longitudinally thereof along both sides of the car body in spaced transverse relation to center stub sill for carrying longitudinal loads from one end of the car to the other, and a side sill extension extending diagonally between an end of a respective said side sill and said center stub sill for carrying substantially all of the horizontal, longitudinal loads between said side sill and said center stub sill, wherein the improvement comprises: each of said side sill extensions having a tapered height which substantially continuously decreases from said side sill to said center stub sill. |
