The invention relates to a pillar (1) whose mean line, in overall terms tangent to the mean line of the shell (5) of the cooling tower, is situated in a vertical plane passing through the axis of revolution of the shell (5). The cross-section of the pillar (1) is in overall terms polygonal and variable over the height of the pillar (1), increasing from the top (3) to the base (4). The mean line of the pillar is near or coincident with the imaginary line of descent of the loads. The infrastructure consisting of the group of such pillars (1) behaves in a satisfactory manner with respect to the eccentric forces caused by the descent of the loads, and it does not exhibit any risk of instability with respect to lateral forces, such as earthquakes, while at the same time promoting a good air draught towards the chimney represented by the shell (5). <IMAGE>
