An open-gear lubricant consists essentially, in per cent by weight, of: creosote, 0.5-5.0; wool grease, 1.0-15; microcrystalline petroleum wax 1.0-7.5; and an inorganic solid lubricant, 0.5-10; the balance being petroleum bitumen having pen (25 DEG C.) = 10-350 mm/10. The solid lubricant may be of the layer-lattice or laminar type, e.g.: graphite; BN; sulphides of Mo, W, Ti or Pb; selenides of Bi or Cd; tellurides of Ag or Zn; halides of Ca or Pb; molybdates or tungstates of Pb or Ni; or lead oxides. The solid lubricant may be colloidally dispersed in the composition. It may be added as a dispersion in an oil or grease. The composition may be fluxed with coal-tar naphtha for brush application, or mixed with methylene chloride with or without naphtha for aerosol application, using e.g. Freon 12 (Registered Trade Mark) as propellant.ALSO:An open-gear lubricant consists essentially, in per cent by weight of: creosote, 0.5-5.0; wool grease, 1.0-15; microcrystalline petroleum wax 1.0-7.5; and an inorganic solid lubricant, 0.5-10; the balance being petroleum bitumen having pen (25 DEG C.) = 10-350 mm./10.
