A contact element for an electrical connector (1) comprises an elastic core at least partially wrapped with a conductive, deformable plastic sheath (3). In a process for manufacturing an element of this type, a steel component constituting the elastic core (2) is coated electrolytically with a thick film (3) of copper. When the copper has been deposited, the component is heated to harden the steel. During the heating process, the hydrogen ions trapped by the steel escape through the copper, which is porous. Heating also anneals the copper which thus becomes softer and is more easily crushed to improve electrical contact when in use. A very thin protective film (4), e.g. nickel or titanium, is then applied. When used in connectors with several successive contact areas on the flow path of the electric current where conductors overlap, these components provide connections with an impedance less than that of an electrical line length equal to that of the connector.
|
