The impression press is for cardboard sheets in particular, to be stamped out or embossed in an automatic machine. A stamping plate on a stamping tool accommodating the sheet has a closing frame resting on supports on the press frame. There are a bottom pressure plate and a top cover plate. - The pressure plate (6) forms with the stamping plate (7) and frame (8) a unit extending for the full length and width of the press. this is pressed upwards against the fixed cover plate (21) with alignment and support plates (12, 17) for the impression operation. Toggle linkages (32, 33) at the sides between pressure plate and press frame (1) have arms (35,36) extending virtually upwards when extended, and are actuated by horizontal rams (39, 40) or spindles (39, 40). They and the rams or spindles are identical and on opposite sides, working in synchronism to press the unit evenly against the cover plate over the entire surface area.
