Process for producing solute cement comprises: (a) mixing cement forming raw materials low in colouring elements with water, carbon bearing material and a binder; (b) forming the mixt. into modules and drying the modules; (c) sizing the modules to obtain a feed material having a particle seze within a selected size range: (d) supplying the feed material to a fluidised bed vessel; (e) passing air upwards through the fluidised bed vessel contg. the feed material; (f) thermally processing the feed material in the fluidised bed by combustion of the carbon bearing material in the feed material and supplying additional fuel to maintain the fluidised bed at 2500-1700 deg.F; and (g) discharging the cement clinker from teh fluidised bed by displacement, and cooling it. The carbon bearing material forms 5-9 wt.% of the mixt., and provides 60-90 % fuel required whereby reducing condition also maintained internally within the particles of feed material.
