The processing system has a central processor with a set of general purpose registers (GPR), each of which is duplicated by a second register (BR), the selection circuit responding to the processing command type and the corresponding operating mode to provide a control signal for selecting one or other general purpose register (GPR), or its back-up register (BR) when the operating mode is switched. The back-up register is coupled to the multi-purpose register of a different processing block in response to the new processing command. Pref. the control signal for switching the operating mode is obtained from a program-dependent signal provided by the operating program.
