摘要 In aqueous emulsions adapted for electrophoretic film deposition and comprising a continuous aqueous phase having dispersed therein a salt of a base with the heat reaction product of an a , b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid with a polyester of an unsaturated fatty acid and an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol, said heat reaction product having an acid number of at least 40, and an oil soluble phase stably dispersed in the aqueous phase, comprising a resinous polyol at least partially esterified with a monocarboxylic acid, the heat reaction product and polyol ester being present in a weight ratio of 10/90 to 90/10 ; the said reaction product has a viscosity at 220 DEG F. and 100 per cent solids of at least T on the Gardner scale and is substantially free from anhydride groups. The emulsions may be used to form coatings on metal articles by electrophoretic deposition, and the emulsions may be maintained during electrophoresis by supplying thereto (I) a base-deficient, water-free, water-insoluble organic solvent solution of the heat-reaction product and at least partially esterified polyol and (2) a pigmented, base-satisfied aqueous mixture comprising the heat-reaction product, optionally together with a water-soluble organic solvent. In examples zinc phosphate treated steel is coated using aqueous emulsions comprising esterified styrene/allyl alcohol copolymers and non-heat-hardening phenol/formal-dehyde resin, pigment and salts formed from (IV) tung oil, fumaric acid and ammonia; (V) linseed oil and fumaric acid bodied with vinyltoluene and acrylic acid in the presence of di t.butyl peroxide, and ammonia and dimethylethanolamine; (VI) linseed and tung oils and fumaric acid, bodied with di t.butyl peroxide, and diethylamine; and (XI) cyclopentadiene modified linseed oil, dehydrated castor oil and maleic anhydride, and diethylamine.ALSO:In aqueous emulsions adapted for electrophoretic film deposition and comprising a continuous aqueous phase having dispersed therein a salt of a base with the heat reaction product of an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid with a polyester of an unsaturated fatty acid and an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol, said heat reaction product having an acid number of at least 40, and an oil soluble phase, stably dispersed in the aqueous phase, comprising a resinous polyol at least partially esterified with a monocarboxylic acid, the heat reaction product and polyol ester being present in a weight ratio of 10/90 to 90/10; the said heat reaction product has a viscosity at 220 DEG F. and 100% solids of at least T on the Gardner scale and is substantially free from anhydride groups. Examples describe the formation of salts from (I) tung oil and fumaric acid and ammonia, (II) linseed oil and fumaric acid, bodied with vinyl toluene and acrylic acid in the presence of di-t.-butylperoxide, and ammonic and dimethylethanolamine, (III) linseed oil, tung oil and fumaric acid, bodied with di-t.-butyl peroxide, and diethylamine, and (VII) cyclopentadiene-modified linseed oil, dehydrated castor oil and maleic anhydride, and diethylamine; and coating compositions comprising these salts and an oil soluble copolymer from a styrene / allyl alcohol copolymer, non - heat hardening phenol/formaldehyde condensate, rosin, tall oil fatty acids and oiticica oil, red iron oxide and lead silico chromate, organic solvents and water, optionally together with soya lecithin.
