The ventilation fan uses a radial fan wheel (3) attached to a shaft (1) outside the machine housing. The fan is fitted with a hood (8) having a cylindrical section (17) with an outer dia. corresp. to the outer contour of the machine housing and a conically tapered forward section (16). The fan wheel (3) has a relatively small dia., with a ratio of 0.5 between the dia. of the fan wheel (2) and the dia. of the cylindrical section (17) of the hood (8) for an 8-pole machine and a ratio of 0.3 for a 2-pole machine. Pref. a grid (12) is fitted across the open end of the forward section (16) of the hood (8).
