Proposed is a conveyor system intended to convey workpieces on carriers to or from at least one processing unit (14). The system has a stepwise-driven conveyor (11), in particular a belt or chain conveyor (40), fitted with cams (19) which determine the position of each workpiece carrier (18) in the transport direction and hold the workpiece carrier between them. The conveyor (11) is driven through a prior art step transmission (32). A first signal generator (21) determines the advance of the conveyor while a second signal generator (22) determines the rate of advance, the drive (30) to the transmission (32) being controlled by the signals generated by the signal generators (21, 22) in such a way that the signal from the first signal generator (21) cuts out the drive (30) when a step forward has been executed, and the signal from the second signal generator (22) starts the drive (30) up again at the end of the processing time for a workpiece.
