The fuel injection pump consists of a housing (1) with a row of cylinder bores (2), and pistons (3) operating in each bore. Each piston is actuated by a camshaft (6) and a roller (5). The fuel flows into the pump chamber through an axial hole (22) in the piston (5), which is connected by a radial hole (23) to an oblique groove (24). The timing of the inlet flow into the groove is controlled by a slider (9) which fits around the piston (5). The slider is moved axially by a rotary shaft (12) with a radially projecting bolt, fitted with a shoe (43). The latter engages a slot (13) in the side of the slider so that, as the shaft is rotated, the slider is moved axially.
