An adapter (10) provides a plurality of selectable functionable relationships between a set of input signals (14, 16, 18, 20, 22) and control inputs (UP, DN, LT, RT, A, B) of a video game system. The adapter includes an output section (54) for communicating with the system, a receiver (42) for the input signals, and a microprocessor converter (48) for driving the output section in response to the input signals and for changing a functional relationship between the input signals and the output section according to a configuration selector (58). Video games having differing frames of reference can be operated within the same user frame of reference. A first game function defines activation of the left (LT) and right (RT) control inputs from respective left (a) and right (b) input signals, a second game function instead defines activation of the up (UP) and down (DN) control inputs from the same left (a) and right (b) input signals. Similarly, the configuration selector defines functional relationships for control inputs according to rate ranges of an exercise bicycle pedal, operated by the user.
