A weighing device for self-service of goods in department stores has a dormant scale (2) arranged in an upwardly open, floor-mounted enclosure (3). The dormant scale is protected against possible outer influences by the floor-mounted enclosure (3), so that delays are avoided during the weighing process. The arrangement of the carrying container (11) on the dormant scale (2) allows buyers to leave the weighing area more quickly with the weighed goods. A shopping container, for example a shopping trolley (21), may also be used as a weighing receptacle for the scale in the floor-mounted enclosure (3). For that purpose, the dormant scale (50, 60) is designed with a U-shape when viewed from above and is provided with support elements (52, 71) for the shopping container.
