In this method, a standard object (4) consisting of an assembly of intersecting planes, image-acquisition means comprising a fringe pattern (2) projected onto the standard object and display optics (8) associated with a video camera (10) fixing the image obtained by the said projection of the fringe pattern on the standard object, and automatic processing means (12) permitting the determination of the characteristics of the acquisition means and of the characteristics of the relative position of the reference plane relating to the standard with respect to the object reference plane related to the display optics are used. This method is applicable to cartography formation and the control of mechanical parts of various shapes. <IMAGE>
