The state of a video head of a VCR is checked and head cleaning is performed for a predetermined period when the head is in a state of reduced efficiency. if this state is not released after the head cleaning, the VCR tape is ejected and an alarm is given. A head cleaner for a VCR is in close contact with a head drum of the VCR by virtue of a magnetic reluctance force while performing the head cleaning. The head cleaner does not subject the video head to impact and frictional force, is easily installed. is compact, and requires no additional space, and comprises a housing containing a magnet held by a resilient bias arrangement (eg a coil spring) in contact with an electromagnetic coil and carrying a support member having a separably attached cleaning pad. In operation means are provided to compare an output of the head with a predetermined level so as to detect the above state, and to apply a signal to the electromagnet to activate cleaning. <IMAGE>
