Postal documents are delivered between the nip of two belts and past rollers 1-V into a stack, each document passing between the rear of the stack and a stacking belt S of a stacking head Stk pivoted on the axis of a roller A mounted on a carriage Stw. and urged against the stack by a spring V. Documents are removed from the front of the stack. The trailing end of each document is moved towards the stack by a worm W. When no document is delivered or removed, the head is in equilibrium and the carriage stationary. When a document is delivered, the head is forced rearwardly, and a cam SN thereon closes a microswitch SI and the carriage moves backwards until the switch opens and equilibrium is restored. When documents are removed, the head moves forwardly and a microswitch SII is closed and the carriage moves forwardly.
